FC Twente will play in the Champions League for the first time in their history next season after holding Ajax to a goalless draw in the second leg of their decisive play-off.
A 2-1 win for them in Enschede proved to be enough as they held their hosts at bay for much of the match, with Rasmus Lindgren denied in stoppage time by Twente goalkeeper Sander Boschker, who had earlier denied Bruno Silva's snapshot.
As a result, Twente coach Fred Rutten joins Schalke with his name etched into history as the only man to have led them into Europe's top club competition.
Opposite number Adrie Koster leaves Ajax in the UEFA Cup - not what incoming coach Marco van Basten wanted.
Elsewhere ADO Den Haag secured the final place in next season's Eredivisie with a 2-1 win over RKC Waalwijk in their play-off decider.
After draws in the first two games, the third remained goalless in the Hague until Richard Knopper struck for the hosts after 74 minutes.
Yuri Cornelisse made it two from the spot after 83 minutes and, though Benjamin De Ceulaer pulled one back with two minutes to play, ADO held on.
NEC Nijmegen completed an impressive comeback as they secured their place in the UEFA Cup with a 7-0 aggregate score over NAC Breda.
Already holding an almost insurmountable 6-0 lead from the first leg, NEC were confident of completing the job in Breda and they did so with a 1-0 victory with a goal on the hour mark thanks to Jeremain Lens.
At the turn of the year NEC were more concerned about relegation than Europe but they bounced back in style with eight wins in their last nine matches propelling them from 14th place to eighth and the last play-off spot.
