Mason Holgate has revealed that Everton had added motivation to beat Liverpool after enduring moments like Jurgen Klopp’s pitch invasion celebration in 2018.

The Toffees beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in 23 attempts this weekend, with Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson securing a 2-0 victory.

The 2018 Anfield clash saw Jurgen Klopp run on to the pitch to embrace Alisson after Divock Origi’s last-minute winner.

And Holgate claims moments like that provided extra motivation to get one over on their Merseyside rivals.

“It was more just relief,” Holgate said when asked about the jubilant celebrations in the Everton dressing room after the game.

“Obviously, quite a lot of us in that squad have experienced going there before and you sound bitter but there’s been times when they’ve scored in the last minute and their gaffer is running onto the pitch.

“They’re always celebrating and to finally get one back was massive, that’s why everyone was just so happy.”

The defender was then asked if moments like that had impacted Everton’s squad.

“Yeah it definitely plays on your mind,” he told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel FIVE.

“Things like that, I don’t even know how to say about it.

“To be able to put it nicely, I’m not really sure how to do it. It just gets to you so bad and then you’re seeing it for weeks on videos.

“So to get one over like that was good.”
